Kraków Christmas Market 2026 — dates, food, prices and where to stay

PolskiDeutsch

The Kraków Christmas Market on the Main Market Square opens on 27 November 2026 and runs until 1 January 2027. Entry is free and the stalls stand right in the middle of the Old Town, so the easiest way to get there is on foot. Below you’ll find the dates, what to buy and eat, when to go to avoid the crowds, and where to stay within walking distance of the square.

When is the Kraków Christmas Market in 2026?

From Friday 27 November 2026 to Friday 1 January 2027. Stalls go up between 16 and 26 November and come down between 2 and 5 January, so if you arrive in the last days of November, part of the square will already be filled with wooden huts. This is the last edition under the current three-year agreement between the city and the organiser — the format of future markets will be decided by the city’s new administration.

A smaller Christmas fair usually runs on the Small Market Square (Mały Rynek), just behind St Mary’s Basilica. In 2025 it was open from 1 December to 1 January and it’s worth a detour — it’s noticeably calmer than the main square.

What is the market on the Main Square like?

Expect around a hundred wooden stalls set up on one of the largest medieval market squares in Europe. In 2025 there were 105 of them, decorated with more than 600 living Christmas trees. A wooden nativity scene carved by folk artist Józef Lasik stood in front of the stage, and regional folk ensembles performed at the opening.

Markets on this square are nothing new: the first written records of Kraków’s fairs date back to the 14th century.

What to buy at the Kraków Christmas Market

Christmas decorations dominate: baubles, wreaths, lights and hand-carved nativity scenes. Next to them you’ll find ceramics, jewellery, leather, linen and wool goods, and Kraków souvenirs. Then there are food stalls with things to take home: regional cured meats, cheeses, bread, cakes and sweets.

For a gift that won’t end up in a drawer, look for visible handcraft — a hand-painted bauble, a piece of ceramics or a pair of woollen socks. If you’re flying home, buy cheese and cured meats on your last day and check your airline’s rules on food in luggage.

What to eat at the Kraków Christmas Market

The market is all about hot food, served straight from the grill and big cooking pots. These are the classics:

  • bread with lard (pajda ze smalcem) — a thick slice toasted over the fire, spread with lard and served with a pickled cucumber,
  • grilled oscypek — smoked highland sheep’s cheese, usually with cranberry jam,
  • soups — żurek (sour rye soup), kwaśnica (sauerkraut soup), clear beetroot barszcz, pea soup and bigos (hunter’s stew),
  • grilled food — sausage, skewers and pork knuckle,
  • pierogi and krokiety (breaded rolled pancakes) — with meat, with cabbage and mushrooms, or with cheese and mushrooms,
  • potato pancakes, lángos and zapiekanka (Polish open-faced baguette),
  • maczanka — Kraków’s own sandwich of roast meat dipped in gravy,
  • mulled wine and hot winter tea to warm up, with halva and other sweets for dessert.

On the Main Square you pay for the location, so treat the market as a place for a snack and a hot drink, and walk a few streets away to a restaurant for a proper meal. Go for food made in front of you — bread toasted over the fire or krokiety straight from the pan taste best.

When is the best time to visit?

For a calmer visit, come on a weekday, before noon or in the early afternoon. Weekend evenings and the first weekend after the opening are the busiest. The market is at its most beautiful after dark, when the lights come on — and in December it gets dark before 4 pm, so you don’t have to wait until late.

A good plan for one day: the market at noon, a walk along the Planty park or the Royal Road to Wawel Castle, and back to the square after dark. If you’re in town on the first Thursday of December, you’ll also catch the famous Kraków nativity scene (szopka) competition by the Adam Mickiewicz monument.

How to get to the Christmas Market

On foot or by tram. Much of the Old Town is closed to cars, and trams run around the Planty park — from the stops by the Old Town you’ll reach the square in a few minutes. A 60-minute ticket costs 8 PLN and a 24-hour ticket for zone I costs 20 PLN.

Driving is harder. Since 1 January 2026 Kraków has a Clean Transport Zone that covers the entire Old Town and Kazimierz. Cars registered outside Poland must be registered in advance at sct.zdmk.krakow.pl. Parking in the centre is scarce in December, so the most convenient option is to leave the car at your hotel and explore on foot. More practical tips are in our guide to a Kraków city break without a car.

Where to stay near the Christmas Market

The closer you stay to the Main Square, the less time you spend getting around and the easier it is to pop back in the evening for the lights. Two good options within walking distance:

Best Western Plus Kraków Old Town at 6 Świętej Gertrudy Street, right by the Planty park, about 500 m from the Main Square — the market is a few minutes’ walk away. The hotel has its own car park in the city centre (20 spaces, 65 PLN per day, booking a space in advance is recommended), the MidTown restaurant, and welcomes pets.

Hotel Regent at 19 Bożego Ciała Street, in an 18th-century townhouse in the heart of Kazimierz. The Main Square is about a 15-minute walk away, and after the market you’re back among the cafés and restaurants of the former Jewish quarter. The hotel has no car park of its own, which makes it a natural choice if you arrive by plane or train. Book on the hotel’s website with the code r20 to get 20% off.
