What is Kraków’s altitude? The city’s highest and lowest points
Kraków lies at an altitude of 188 to 383 metres above sea level. The lowest point is where the Kościelnicki stream joins the Vistula on the city’s eastern edge, and the highest is the top of the Piłsudski Mound on Sowiniec hill (figures from Statistics Poland and the City Hall) — a difference of almost 200 metres. The Old Town and the Main Square lie at about 220 m. So where exactly are Kraków’s highest and lowest points?
Kraków’s highest points
Back when the city was little more than Wawel and its surroundings, the altitude was easy to state: Wawel Hill rises to 228 m above sea level. Today, though, Wawel isn’t among the city’s highest places.
Kraków’s highest point is the top of the Józef Piłsudski Mound on Sowiniec in the west of the city — 383 m according to official data. It’s the largest mound in Poland. Sowiniec hill itself, without the mound, is 358 m. The second-highest hill is Pustelnik in the Wolski Forest (352 m), and the highest hill outside the Sowiniec range is Rajsko (349 m) in the south, topped since the 1880s by the Austrian Fort 51 “Rajsko”.
Closer to the centre, the top of Kościuszko Mound is about 330 m above sea level, some 131 m above the Vistula flowing at its foot. Krakus Mound stands on Lasota Hill (271 m) in Podgórze.
Kraków’s lowest points
The lowest places are on the city’s eastern edge. According to Statistics Poland, the mouth of the Kościelnicki stream on the Vistula lies at 188 m. Fun fact: the stream was once a border — first between the Free City of Kraków and the Kingdom of Poland, and until 1918 between Austria-Hungary and Russia.
High in Kleparz, low in Podgórze?
In the centre the differences are smaller but noticeable. According to terrain models, the Main Square lies at about 220 m, Kleparz Market at about 215–219 m and Podgórze Market at just about 205 m. So Kleparz is roughly 10 metres higher than Podgórze, though not higher than the Old Town. Both districts were once separate towns: Kleparz received its town charter in 1366 and became part of Kraków in 1792, while Podgórze, founded in 1784 by Emperor Joseph II, merged with Kraków in 1915.
