The Wawel chakra — where it is and where the power-stone legend comes from
The Wawel chakra is a legend about a “power stone” hidden on Wawel Hill — supposedly one of the Earth’s seven energy centres. The spot tourists touch is the north-west corner of the Royal Castle’s arcaded courtyard, to the left of the entrance, by the former chapel of St Gereon. But the legend isn’t ancient: it was first mentioned in 1935, and no stone has ever been found. The castle asks visitors not to touch the wall. Here’s where the story comes from.

Where is the chakra at Wawel?
The legend places the chakra where the Romanesque basilica of St Gereon stood in the 11th century — its remains now lie beneath the Batory Courtyard and the castle’s west wing. Tourists, however, gather in the north-west corner of the arcaded courtyard, to the left of the entrance, by the former chapel of St Gereon (later St Mary of Egypt), leaning against the wall hoping to “recharge”. The castle has put up a sign asking people not to touch the wall.
Where does the chakra legend come from?
The first mention of a Wawel “power stone” appeared in January 1935 in the Kraków theosophical monthly “Lotos”, which described Wawel as one of the seven “lotuses of the Earth”, or centres of spiritual energy. The theosophist Wanda Dynowska popularised the legend in India, and the word “chakra” only became attached to Wawel in the 1980s, with the New Age movement. Different versions of the story list Rome, Jerusalem and Delhi among the seven sacred places.
The backdrop to the legend was probably the excavations at Wawel in 1914–1920 and the work of Adolf Szyszko-Bohusz, which uncovered remains of the hill’s oldest buildings. Tales of priests from the East, druids or the rings of Apollonius of Tyana are later additions with no historical basis.
What does the Royal Castle say?
In the early 2000s the castle openly distanced itself from the legend for three reasons: visitors leaning on the wall damage the monument, belief in the chakra conflicts with Catholic faith, and the whole story trivialises a place of great historical value. Measurements of “energy” have found nothing. Even so, the legend still draws the curious — it’s worth knowing, but please don’t touch the monument.
Remains of St Gereon’s church can be seen on castle routes that open Wawel’s underground spaces — check the current offer on the Wawel Royal Castle website.
